OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY SERVICES

Occupational Therapy offers assistance to individuals who face increased difficulty feeding themselves or being fed by others, dressing, bathing, grooming, transferring to beds or toilets, balancing and/or reaching for items.  Occupational therapy programs are designed to increase an individual’s independence in daily living routines after being disrupted by illness, injury, normal aging or developmental disability. Below are some indications of when to seek Occupational Therapy.

Medical Diagnoses that may require Occupational Therapy:

  • Head Trauma
  • Paraplegia
  • Quadriplegia
  • Respiratory Disease
  • Fractures
  • Arthritis
  • Joint Replacements
  • Amputation
  • Neurological/Psychological Disorders

When to refer for Occupational Therapy:

  • Increased difficulty with feeding self or when being fed by others
  • Increased difficulty with dressing, bathing or grooming
  • Increased difficulty with transfers to toilet or bed
  • Increased number of falls
  • Decreased balance
  • Limitations in functional use of upper body
  • Limitations in range of motion of upper body
  • Increased difficulty reaching for objects
  • Stiffness or constriction in muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments, or skin
  • Decreased coordination
  • Increased tremors
  • Seating and positioning abnormalities
  • Bumping into walls
  • Difficulty writing
  • Ulcers or Bedsores

Occupational Therapy May Provide Treatment for Deficits In:

  • Activities of daily living (feeding, dressing, grooming, bathing)
  • Positioning
  • Home safety and management
  • Upper extremity, fine motor and therapeutic exercise program
  • Bathroom safety
  • Visual/perceptual problems
  • Muscle management
  • Meal preparation
  • Feeding self
  • Writing
